Arunachal Pradesh, via Bomdila and Dirang
Monasteries, high-altitude lakes and the drive over Sela Pass. The big one: two days on the road each way, and worth every hairpin.

Meghalaya
Shillong, Sohra, Mawlynnong and Dawki
Living root bridges, cliffs and waterfalls around Sohra, and the clear green Umngot river at Dawki.

- October to May for clear days. June to September for waterfalls at full flow.

Kaziranga and Majuli
Assam
One-horned rhinos and elephants from a safari jeep, then a ferry across the Brahmaputra to Majuli's satras and villages.

- November to April. The park closes for the monsoon and reopens in October.

Good to know before you go
Arunachal needs a permit
Indian guests need an Inner Line Permit to enter Arunachal Pradesh, and we apply for it with your photo ID. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit instead, so tell us early.
Sela Pass is high and cold
The road to Tawang crosses 4,170 m. Pack warm layers even in October, and tell us about any health conditions before you book.
Mountain roads take time
Distances look short on a map and take a full day on the road. Heavy snow can close Sela Pass, so we check the road before every departure.
Seasons change the trip
Meghalaya is clearest from October to May, and its waterfalls are biggest in the monsoon. Kaziranga is best from November to April and closes for the monsoon.
